Openness and compatibility are going to be the key forces behind Web giant Google’s first major step into the cellphone universe.

Although the much-rumored gPhone wasn’t announced, Google said today it will release a software platform dubGoogle Android Softwarebed “Android” that will allow anyone—from amateur hackers to mobile phone companies—to create applications for widespread use on the go. To ensure that these new applications find a home on mobile devices, Google also has formed the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 34 companies that include manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola and Samsung and service providers like T-Mobile, Qualcomm and Sprint Nextel.

“In order for there to be a gPhone, you’re going to need to have an operating system with the right capabilities, architecture and applications,” Google’s chief executive, Eric Schmidt, said in a conference call. “If there were a phone, Android would be the correct choice.”

Schmidt says Google isn’t going to eliminate any possibility of a gPhone in the near future, but for now an open platform will allow customers to have “thousands of different choices” for phones running Google’s software. Google essentially wants to be the Windows of the mobile-phone industry, and while competitors such as Microsoft, RIM, Symbian and Palm have decided to go the path of a closed, monetized software platform, Google plans to put everything out in the open in an effort to gain marketshare quickly.

Hardware and software specifications haven’t been released, but Google says the baseline device needs to have a 200mhz ARM9 processor—hardware already common in phones such as the recent line of Sony Ericssons. Google’s software, meanwhile, works on phones of all shapes and sizes, from a small-screen QWERTY smartphone to a newer touchscreen device (No word yet on whether the software will be backward-compatible with current and older phones)

A couple of months ago, news rolled over media, print ads and in the internet about Nokia product advisory. This has something to do with the defective BL-5C battery of Nokia manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Company of Japan in the period of December 2005 and November 2006. In line with the product advisory, Nokia will provide new BL-5C batteries as a replacement of the defective batteries in the said period of manufacture acquired by Nokia customers. Heard over news, Nokia will replace over one and a half million plus Nokia BL-5C defective batteries worldwide.

This battery replacement action made by Nokia was pursued due to complaints reported to them by some customers. The said customers have experienced blowing up their cell phone in the time of charging them. In line with the product advisory, Nokia through their website, opened an electronic portal where customers can check their BL-5C batteries whether it is defective or not by providing the unique 26 alpha numeric key of the battery which is located at its back side.

Of curiosity, I checked my mobile phone I am using which is Nokia 3110 and found out that it uses a BL-5C battery. So I quickly followed the instruction stated and supplied the unique alphanumeric key of my battery. And the next message came out, “Your battery may be replaced…” and it asks again some personal information in order where the battery will be delivered. After three weeks I think of waiting, my new BL-5C was delivered through the DHL services. Here’s a photo of my new and my old BL-5C batteries.
